In one of the year’s most surprising and electrifying collaborations, Scott and Seth Avett of The Avett Brothers have teamed up with Mike Patton to form AVTT/PTTN. Their new album of original songs, written by the three artists together is set for release on November 14 via Thirty Tigers in association with Ramseur Records and us here at Ipecac Recordings.

What began as a casual exchange of admiration soon grew into a genuine creative partnership. The Avetts and Patton, longtime mutual fans, found themselves trading songs and ideas across coasts, with each sketch evolving as it passed through the trio’s hands. “This is what art is,” Scott reflects. “This is what making is supposed to be: in secret and with no ambition.”

For the Avetts, working with Patton was more than just a new collaboration — it was a full-circle moment. “Mike’s part of our DNA, like the fabric of our youth,” says Scott. “Literally, we studied him. He’s a dear friend now, but when we were younger, I was imitating him.” Patton adds, “My peculiar challenge in this was to become a long distant cousin. A brother that was orphaned. Maybe they kept him in the chicken coop or some shit. They brought him out years and years later.”

For those of you not familiar with The Avett Brothers, they are four-time Grammy Award nominees that have made waves in the Americana, Folk and Rock worlds since their critically acclaimed 2009 debut, I and Love and You. They've had a documentary about them, May It Last, co-directed by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio, a broadway musical called Swept Away and a slew of chart-topping albums over the past two decades.
